The most sustainable hardware is that which doesn’t need to be replaced. The goal should be to maximize the lifespan of IT equipment by:
- Sustainable procurement:
- Leasing instead of buying: Providers such as AfB, CHG-Meridian, and Green IT Solutions offer devices on a subscription basis with return.
- Buy refurbished: Professionally refurbished devices reduce emissions by up to 70% compared to new devices.
- Longer use through maintenance & upgrades:
- Clean devices regularly and perform software updates.
- Make components (e.g. RAM, SSD) retrofittable.
- Replaceable batteries, displays and keyboards facilitate repair.
- Responsible handling after end of use:
- IT donations to schools or non-profit organizations.
- Return to manufacturers or certified disposal companies (e.g. with R2, e-Stewards certification).
Tip: Implement an internal system for reuse – for example, devices from reception can be reused internally or used for training.
